How long for this job?

Can anyone tell me how long it would take someone competent (not me, I said competent) to strip and replace the outer axle (wheel) bearings on a salisbury axle (rear, drum)? The guy charges by the hour you see.

If he has the right tools and knows what he is doing, it might take him as long as an hour a side, but I would have thought a professional would be able to do both sides in an hour. Takes me about two hours a side. These times assume that no other problems are found (such as a leaking wheel cylinder, necessitating a brake job), and that there is not a holdup due to rusted up bolts or similar (only one I can think of that could cause a problem is the brake drum retaining screw). I've been at the brakes recently (new shoes and 1 cylinder) so it should be straight in with no problems for him.

Allow an hour a side max, assuming that no problems are found. 15 minutes to strip it, 20 to change the races in the hub and 15 to put it back together again. Bearings friction welded to the stub axle, for example, take much longer to sort out, but if it's a straightforward job and he's charging you, say, 3 hours or more labour he's taking the piss.

Certainly I've managed to do both sides of an axle under 2 hours. I had a wheel nearly fall off on a IIA, and I did hub bearings and swivel bearings & seals that side in an hour.

Realistically, an hour a side by the time he's done the job in a clean, careful manner. I've just done said job on a little truck (same sort of setup) for a friend, and it took 3 hours (for both sides) including running down the road for new bearings. And this was done at home in my driveway using the tools I keep at home (so a bit slower than in the workshop).
