I can imagine that being near by would not be very healthy. I can't imagine this being the case for the initial explosion this morning though, the ones 20 mins later maybe. Caught a bit earlier this evening (Ch4 News?) where the MP and ex fire fighter was talking about the incident. He mentioned in passing that the depot wasn't working fully and was in some form of maintenance...

I was trying to check the location on Google Earth. It's in a low- resolution area, and it isn't very clear where the tanks are, not compared to the Killingholme tank farms, which look to be much bigger. But it's still frighteningly close to Hemel Hempstead.

I'm in Luton and I slept through it. As usual. I've been known to sleep through earthquakes before. (Birmingham area, a couple of years ago)

i see it holds 5% of the uks fuel when full so how big an explosion would the Fawley depot make if that went up

I have NEVER heard so much twaddle. It does not (did not) supply petrol or diesel. It is (was) mainly heavy fuel oils and other distillates. These things happen, thankfully not often. Last incident on something NEAR this scale was Flixborough in the 70s Instead of complaining about the "possible" rise in price of fuel be thankful it was a Sun morning and nobody was killed. I will bet your fuel cost dont go up, however your insurance will! They got to get it back from somewhere. The easiest target is YOU !!!! Happy Xmas
