Bike Racks for a Disco ?

Hi Santa brought some bikes this year too ;-) Has anyone got any good recommendations for a rear mounted cycle carrier - either on the ball or the spare ? TIA Mac

SIMBARS do a good one which mounts on the spare wheel studs. It is quickly detachable & fixes with the padlock supplied.

Here in the US at least, "Hollywood Racks" makes a four-bike hitch-mounted rack that is absolutely BULLETPROOF. I've had 200lb of bikes on it for hours of off-road driving and suffered no problems at all... even grounding on rocks did not significantly damage it. There are three- and two-bike versions available as well. The four-biker runs $139 at most shops.

IMHO, the spare-wheel carriers are a very, very poor idea. You are loading a part of the vehicle which is easy to damage and which is not easy to replace. A new Class III hitch is $150... how much is a new cargo door?

One unappreciated benefit of the hitch-mounted rack is that if you are rear-ended at low speed while (whilst) using it, the damage to your Rover will be nonexistent but the damage to the striking vehicle is truly horrifying.

I've got one of the Simbars ones and they are very solid, but when I'm travelling any distance I use a ratchet load strap to support the weight of the bikes, coupled with strong bungees, both connected to the roof rack. This relieves the strain on the rear door and prevents someone behind ending up with a bonnet full of bikes if the wheel holder gives way.

Mine originally came off a Disco, but has been modified by a blacksmith friend to fit my 110. Simbars also do a load carrier which fits the same carrier base. Cheers, John
