Chasing my tail

Well just an update on revent tinkerings. The RR had its Injectors overhauled at huge cost but a fraction of the price of new and LR main agent fitting. The Turbo whistle is really begining to play on my mind so I'm going to gave to strip it down and send it in for a diagnosis at Turbotechniques.

The 110 has been fettled with new discs and pads on the front.. now the friggin bearing has an oscillation so I repacked with grease at the weekend to be sure but it still has come back again. So I've just got a set of bearings, grease and one shot for the swivel (always manage to loose some swivel oil when removing the caliper hose bracket. - grrr!). I hate this job as the bearing seats are generally a bitch to drift out of the hub. Fortunarely I have put a drift Derek sent me "somewhere safe" so will proceed later to spend longer looking for said safe place than probably doing the job.

Hey ho!

Right I'm off out shortly to sort this, I've managed to find the drift - thanks again Derek , then had a recollection of a purchase of an Aldi air chisel kit , and my Dad is dropping off a puller set on his way past on the off chance that one of the pullers will do the trick.

This means one of two things... I will be back shortly wondering what all the fuss was about... or I freak incident resulting in pain and discovery of new volcabulary for the neighbours.

Standby for the next installment.. fingers crossed I won't have to type it with my nose!

;o)

Lee, forgotten where you are but are these people any handier for you - Wakefield?

I was a satisfied customer of the founder many years ago and about two years back someone here had a very positive encounter with them.

Thanks Dougal, I'll get a quote from them if nothing else.

All is well on the 110 front.. squeak is gone... all fingers and thumbs accounted for. I'm going to pay for that clearly!

Todays update. And work on the Rangie ( L322 TD6 ) I very nearly have the Turbo out.. what a ball ache it is to get to. I ran out of light and time.. Its currently stuck in the bay unbolted.. I just need to figure out how to get it out. I may yet need to remove the exhaust manifold too. I did try earlier but snapped a torx driver so that kind of put the spanner in the works.

Just for reference of any one else who does this in the future, engine cowling needs to come off... injectors removed , inlet manifold off... rocker cover and air box off (one piece item - STUPID BMW!) . Then you can get to the turbo. As I say unbolted , so may yet need the exhaust manifold off, unless I can get it out underneath.

Hope that you find something wrong with the turbo after all the effort - well, you know what I mean!

Yep I know what you mean, hence why I've wrestled with this job, both with regards to sending it in to be done (garage) or diy. Even to see the hoses to check them the above needs to come off... sadly they were all fine. I had to remove the exhaust manifold this morning early.

Actuator is not moving along its full length on travel , (turbo guru says this is typical of my syptoms) and the bearings appear to have some slop in them with quite a bit of sideways movement , not endfloat.

I ran it down to Northampton this morning, just incase I sound like I know what I'm talking about :o) , should get it back next week fingers crossed. Quoted £240 to £400 depending on what it needs in the end. The guys that are doing it rang me up when I sent the turbo to them from the RRC to say there was nowt wrong with it so I have some confidence they aren't about to fleece me.

A new garratt is aroung £700 and Landrover genuine parts £1400. I reckon 6 hours labour on and off. Local non franchised back street landrover specialist has never done a TD6 and many owners say they have never heard of a problem, yet I know 3 cases such as mine since, one which proved terminal for the turbo, the other two are in Greece and two further documented on the RR.net info. Our very own Nige has question marks over his.

I don't think most folk who run L322s have any mechanical knowledge so won't be as sensitive to such issues as me... I need the car to do some hard labour again soon across France with the caravan and I don't want it to ruin the holiday this year. I had a horrid vision of the bearings failing and it running on its own oil with a catastrophoic failure to follow. I could have done without this expense but it is better to prevent my vision.

Todays update...

Call from Turbo Techniques to say that the Turbo is in remarkably good condition generally however was heavily carboned up around the mechanisim for the actuator flap within the housing. They are replacing bearings and seals and hopefully it will be back for the end of the week by courier for £280 all in. I'm well chuffed with that as non genuine knock around at £700 and genunine at £1400. I reckon I'd have said goodbye to over £2000 if Landrover had done this work. I got a set of new exhaust manifold nuts and studs, and four new washers for the banjo bolt... I need one but always pays to have one on the shelf or three (I lost one). Hopefully won't be too long and the RR will be on the road again. Then its in for autobox fluid and filter change at the local auto specialist. Again a job that could be done at home but they have quoted a price that makes it a nonsense to spend two hours on my back studdling with the size of the RR.

Well, it came back, refitted.. took around 4 and 1/2 hours though I took my time so as not to screw anything up. All back together and running fine. Now whistles in all the right places.

:-)

Next job , change the auto fluid and filter... apparently fitted for life but I'm expecting more life out of it than Landrover / GM / BMW.
