Completely OT: Anyone know the names of these?

I dont know if it is the same thing, but for kitchen unit fitting I use something which looks identical to that, which is called an Inter Screw, and which is used to join adjacent kitchen units together when fitting them. Only problem is, not really great for boat use, as they are not brass, just nickel plated, but maybe that can put you on the path to finding the proper thing.

I may have made a bit of progress, as one place I've just visited found something looking very like them in a German catalogue, but in stainless steel rather than brass, and they seemed to be missing from the accompanying price list.

It looks as though the difficult things to find are called Barrel nuts or Sex Bolts (!). Mine are M5 and brass to match the existing ones would be much better than stainless.

Anyone know a really good brass nut & bolt supplier?

I think they are known as mushrooms. you need a male and female.

Do you need metal one's we use nylon in the print industry, for swatch books and shade cards but you can get brass, best thing is to look for a print finisher, and ask nicely, they may have a few hundred kicking around.

The last company I used for this type of work was Prima Print finishing in Bradford.

There's AFU1280 - the "nut" that holds the stay bracket from wheel arch to the wing top on Defenders - the picture on page N60 of the parts book looks very similar, M6 though. No idea what they are made of, I've been outside to have a look on Dennis, but can really see them and we don't have any on the shelf.

Just found them on page M100 as well - the drawing is entirely different! Mmmmmmmm

After ringing every supplier in the North West (it seemed) I found someone who has ordered me 100 on 10 days delivery. In his catalogue (also in a foreign language) they were called case nuts, so I just hope they are the right thing. I couldn't get brass, had to settle for stainless, so I'll have to replace all 50 and have a huge box of spares.

I have to say that nut and bolt suppliers all sound very friendly and helpful. It's just terribly difficult to find odd things where you don't know the name.

Glad you found them. I've just been googling and this place in Taiwan seem to sell the things you want in brass as 'sex bolts'

I found quite a few Indian companies offering (or maybe offering to manufacture) all sorts of obscure nuts and bolts. Purely for interest now, but I assumed they would expect you to place an order for huge quantities. The way Britain is being driven, maybe we will need to find out more about these foreign companies now that all our workforce is being retrained as nicotine policemen..
