Core plug woes....

Me 3.9V8 Disco has been using a bit of water lately. the good news is it appears not to be the head gaskets, but one of the core plugs on the passenger side.

A steady drip drip is coming out of the one behind the engine mounting. Is there anything i can put in the cooling system as a temp solution until i get it fixed. Was thinking along the lines of Barrs Leaks or something like that.

And how easy are they to change etc etc.

Unlikely to hold for any length of time, and when it does fail it'll go big-style, possibly overcooking the engine in the process.

Drain coolant. Burst through with large screwdriver and prise out. Clean recess. Coat outer edge of new one with sealant (I use aircraft fuel tank sealant!!!), something like blue hylomar ought to do. Drift into place. Refill coolant. Job done.

Worth a try I guess.

To get them out you belt one edge with a screwdriver and they swivel allowing you to pull them out with mole grips.

To reapply they either go in no trouble or you can spend many unhappy hours. Get a socket as big as you can and hit it square it should pop in. Use goo of choice around the hole to help it seal as they can weap initially anyway.

How easy depends on access to do the above... some at the back are an engine out job.

I blew one out of the Jag lump when I left it full of plain water within the garage over the winter. Still froze and fortunately the first thing to go was the core plug.. made a nice fountain effect when fired up later post winter.

The plug in question is mostly hidden under the bracket for the engine mounting rubber on the passenger side of the car. Getting it out should be easy, quick whack with hammer and screw driver and i think it will come out. Getting it back in looks fun. I can't see a way to get a socket on the new plug and be able to hit it with a hammer due to it's closeness to the bracket.

I've just had a quick look at all the others and they all look ok, sods law that it's the hardest one to get to. I'll put the ramps under it tomorrow and have a proper inspection of what needs doing.

engine

Is it possible to support the engine with a jack, the remove the offending bracket, install the core plug, then refix the bracket?

Supporting the engine to remove bracket will make the job easy.

A more controlled method of application may also be useful in this case then such as a crowbar used against a suitable leverage point that ain't going anywhere and the socket and core plug in the appropriate place for insertion.
