Defender 110 brakes

If the brakes are working properly, you should not a great deal of pressure to stop. It may be a good idea to take your vehicle to an MOT station, and have them check out the braking system for you.

If your problem is such that you can still not operate the brakes effectively when they are working fully, then you perhaps need to consider having some hand controls fitted.

Brakes are not the sort of thing you want to start fiddling with if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

Your Brake servo might be faulty. Press the brakes a few times to exhaust the servo with the engine off. Put your foot on the pedal and start the engine. The pedal should now go down without any more pressure from you. Also I have just put new discs and pads on mine and the brakes are a lot better. To put less pressure on the brake pedal to apply brake, you need a stronger servo. Yours Gmacz

you should have either disc/disc or disc/drum. and a fair-sized servo.

check that the servo is getting vacuum, (if it's a diesel, it probably has a vacuum pump), and that it's working correctly.

failing this and if the rest of the braking system is in good nick ( no seized calipers or anything) then your only real option is a bigger servo or more vacuum in the existing one.
