Diesel injectors

Am I right in believing that the injector on diesels should be replacedat some point in an engines life? If so, how do you know when that pointis?I have a record of all sorts of work that the AA carried out to my 110while they had it but I can't see any mention of injectors anywhere.Hopefully that means that they are OK.It has now done 146,000 miles so I was wondering what the symptoms offaulty injectors would be. At night I can see exhaust smoke in the lightsof cars behind me but during the day I can't really see any. It alsochucks out a puff of black smoke when starting and sometimes whenworking the engine hard.So, does that sound normal or not? Also can anyone recommend someonewho knows their diesels in Herts, I have had Oaktree garage in PetersGreen recommended to me but I was wondering if there are any others.TIA.

It is usually obvious where the knocking is coming from. It can be felt through the injector as well, if it is that bad. The knocking tends to be more of a tap, tap, tap, tap every second or so.
