Freelander 1: Fuel Consumption

Hi,

I have owned my Freelander HSE 2.0 TD4 Auto, for 3 or 4 months. Whilst I am really very pleased with it, I have found it to consume quite a lot in the way of fuel.

A full tank only gives me about 350-390miles at best. Whilst I am no expert at working out such things, surely this is way below the 37.2mpg combined figure quoted by landrover.

The car has about 13k miles on the clock. Tyres are at correct pressure and most journeys involve some town and motorway driving.

Should I have landrover check the engine settings? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

37.2mpg combined is the figure for the manual TD4 not the auto.

I only ever got about 27mpg out of TD4 auto on the to and from work stuff. Lots of junctions and lights. I think it did as much as 34 on a run. I am not a terribly light-footed driver.

Firstly the 37mpg figure is for the manual version, secondly, after 13k it will not be giving its best, and if you habitually drive slowly, then a good blast will help it.

and thirdly, you'd be hard put to achieve quoted economy figures in the real world... especially the ones for "constant 56".

I don't think you need worry -- in my experience the TD4 is not the frugal beast we would like to believe. Over the past 15,723 miles my (68K overall) manual has averaged 31.28, with a best monthly figure of

32.87. Not the 35+ that I'd been expecting/hoping for!

My manual TD4 returns a consistent 35-37mpg on my 'combined' journey patterns and around 28mpg when towing 1.5ton on longer steady journeys.

That's about what I was expecting before I bought mine. But my figures could be the result of daily use of Birk Brow -- a particular steep dual-carriageway hill with two bends that's the only place where you can pass the caravans, supermarket trucks and Reginald Q.Molesworths that wobble down to Whitby. The 'spirited' driving that results is probably working the turbo VERY hard!

Strangely, when I recently hauled the Series 1 to Dewsbury on a car trailer, I was impressed both with the ease with which the Freelander did it, and the fact that the consumption figures that month only dropped by about 0.2 mpg.
