Freelander TD4 Issue

Hi all,

Guess who having prblems again! I have 2 for the experts here to ponder over :

1) Front tyre wear on inside of tyres. Had tracking checked and thats fine, tyres are correct pressures, this is the second set its killed, last time i was assured by Sturgess that is was the tracking. Obviously there were wrong. Does any one have any experice of this?

2) I just travelled to Chemlsford along the M11 and noticed that it started kicking down going up the hills! It appears that there is a lack of power going on. Foot to the floor is returned with a strange black fog surrounding the car behind!!!! Would this be a failled injector going on? More to the point will it get me home.....3 hours away?????

Many thanks guys

Dave

Car normally used in an area with many speed bumps/pads that are straddled?

A single injector problem would give rise to rough running/misfire so that's probably ruled out.

I don't know anything at all about this engine ..... but look for a disconnected/cracked hose either between the turbocharger and the inlet manifold or a smaller bore control hose to the turbocharger wastegate.

Will you get home? - probably.

Sounds more like a turbo problem to me. If the smokes blue it's oil.

Check hoses & what have you.

On a similar note - collapsed air intake hose, disintegrating air filter, partially blocked exhaust?

I should have thought of those, too!

Internally collapsed hoses which are not visible from the outside, but which can sometimes be anticipated by feel, are not unheard of.

Thanks Everyone.

I think i will get the Air filter and hoses checked in the morning.....spanners out and delve into he murk dephts of a TD4....Sunday morning fun.

I wouldn't have thought it would be the exhaust thats collapsed as the black smoke is getting out! More likely air intake hose collapse,

Thanks again.

Think again - it's a very real possibility (as is a damaged/blocked catalytic convertor if it has one). BTDTGTTS.

The TD4 has a crankcase breather fitted 'internally' (under cam cover) which can cause these very problems if it becomes blocked/congested. If it has then the air filter will be congested also. BMW have it specified on there service schedule for the change but for some reason LandRover TD4s which use the same engine do not. It can also cause a whitish puff of smoke if you blip the accelerator after a few minutes idle but the massive black smoke output and loss of power (particularly just after excelleration) is the symptom usually spotted by most. It can easily be confused with much more expensive problems ....... this part is _about £25_ and around the same to have fitted + air filter.

If they say the tracking was out, did they carry out any work to rectify it? If so, why was it out? I would have a second opinion on the tracking and also have a full suspension and steering check carried out. In my experience of tracking gauges I've found some to be inaccurate due to careless handling, there are other ways to assess tracking accurately.

As others have said, it's probably down to restricted airflow, in or out, but have the timing checked?

I'd suggest you get tracking checked again by someone else, as an experiment, many years ago I had my tracking checked by three different companies on the same road in Reading, and none of them agreed with each other.

Wheel camber might be worth checking too, not sure how that would go wrong or how to fix it though!

oops ......... guess you spotted the deliberate mistake in the first line. It is of course called the 'cam cover breather/filter' ....... still I guess 'located under the cam cover' was a big enough clue for most.

Hello Everyone

Thanks for all of the further suggestions.

I did find the culpret this morning, and it didn't take much.

On the gearbox end of the engine, at the top, is a very short hose used to make a 90 degree bend in the intake system. Obviousy the hard plastic ducting would not bend that far.

Anyway the rubber hose has split along the inside of the bend. Quick swap...2 jubilee clips, just have to go find a new one, so its good for another 150k miles!

Cheers all

That's not a bad idea, but if the tracking is OK it'll be the shock absorbers. Had a similar problem on a Disco, new cheapo shocks sorted it and it's still sorted 50,000 miles later. TonyB
