Intercooler

Hi Chaps,

I know the principles of the intercooler i.e. cooling the air prior to the turbo and if you want more torque add a bigger one. My question is, could you add another IC in line with the old one and would that work. If not why? (genuine question)

Yes you could, and yes it would....

Only slight snag would be that the air might have to go through some pretty obscure plumbing whereas with a new one piece intercooler there is only the normal intercooler hoses.

Graham Hi,

This is done if you want to keep the standard intercooler in place in case your vehicle comes with A/C (for Discovery series 1 vehicles)

Andy Graham of Allisport has such a setup for Discos. Maybe other suppliers of aftermarket intercoolers offer something similar.

It would, but i am sure that you wouldn´t find enough room for a second one.

Not sure I follow that, how does the (Inter)cooler cool the incoming airflow when it is at the same temperature? The cooler HAS to be after the Turbo!!

The undesirable action of the Turbocharger is to increase the temperature of the airflow, in addition to the desirable action of compressing (increasing the pressure of) it. The Intercooler exposes the increased temperature & pressure charge to air @ a lower temperature. Increasing temperature reduces volume of airflow, hence undesireable.

Thanks to all for the info.

Of course! I forgot to mention this little fault in my posting.

If you really want to delve deep into theory, its not an intercooler, it is actually an aftercooler. It is called an intercooler when two turbos are used in series.

But I think we are now agreed the one before the turbo is called a waste of time!

I thought it was inter 'cos it was between the turbo and the manifold, meself.

mind, they're doing clever things with twin turbos, as reported in a nother thread.
