Mission for Maddie - Wheel cover for 235/85 R16 or 750 Loan.

Before I go on I'd say that I'm hoping and praying that I can cancel this concept and Maddie turns up safe and well PDQ

I'd also ask that people reserve comment on the politics of missing people and views of parents who themselves are now facing the error of there ways.

I'm off to tour Northern Spain and South of France for three weeks shortly. I've made enquiries locally and a company are going to adorn the 110 with images and posters of Maddie in Vynil wrap. They are doing this for free and do not wish to have any sponsor text etc on the posters. I have told them once it's done I will be posting images off to all the Landie mags along with a thankyou to them for there contribution. The idea behind the images to the Landie mags is purely to take advantage of the fact they get exported to all four corners of the globe and may reach audiences who know nothing / little of Maddies case. The Vynil wrap just peels off after the trip leaving the paint undamaged.

Anyway, what I'm asking is can anyone loan us a rear wheel cover. The idea being this will be Vynil wrapped too so any text currently on it will be covered anyway. If the person donating same wishes I can return the cover after the trip or a agreed period of time and the vynil wrap removed.

My rear wheel is a 235/85 r 16 so it would need to fit that. I understand the 750 covers may also fit. Cover should be smoother the better so the vynil sticks. I'm off Monday to get the 110 measured up for it's wrap. I understand that typical Disco type covers are way too small.

You may ask what difference all this may make but having seen interviews in Italy on BBC News the day before the McCanns met the Pope many English Italians hadn't got a clue about Maddies case. My plan is that not only lots of Spanish / French residents will see the 110 but also Tourists from across Europe. The vehicle will be badged up in various languages and also be accompanied by leaflet / poster drops at stores and Petrol Stations on major routes. It may have no effect what so ever... but at least I've made good use of my Holiday touring too.

I'm also taking part in a Sponsored Climb of Snowdon for Madeleines fund on Wednesday 6th.. so far I've totted up £140 odd quid on my sheets.. there's about ten of us going.

My commitment is driven by being a Father of two myself. All of my trip is self funded and already paid up.

Oh I'm in North Staffs if any one can help.

If you dont get a better offer Lee you can have a lend of mine

I've got a semi rigid Fred Cutler one that has some custom text on it (white text on a black background) that would probably be very easy to cover.

I'll see what other junk i can fetch out of the garage to tempt you over.

Gotcha Rich ,

do you know or could you measure the rolling radius - I've a gut feeling it may be a tad small but it's a wild guess.

2475mm or there abouts is the rolling radius on the 235/85 r 16

fingers crossed!

Aha. 2375 is the circumference of the cover on the spare (radius???). I'd disremembered that D2s have smaller wheels. That would make a difference of about 32mm on the radius. Probably too much, although the material of the piece that fits over the tread (as opposed to the round panel, which is rigid) is pretty stretchy and there is a full-width gap at the bottom with just the elastic round the inner edge to allow for different sizes. I reckon it would go on a 750 with a bit of persuasion. The good bit is that the panel has had all the lettering removed, so is pretty clean.

I don't need it back, so if you wanted to take it and butcher it that would not be a problem. If you want it, send me your address and I'll get it in the post tomorrow. Unmung the reply address to email me.

I think what you're doing is a great idea. I sincerely hope all your efforts are in vain and she is found before you leave, though.

That's huge! ... but we know that you meant circumference. Not that it rolls much either when attached to the rear door but that's nit picking.

Why, ffs?!

The media stuff it down our throats 24/7, it's not like more publicity is needed.

Indeed rolling circumference... as opposed to static circumference which would be a tad squashed on a parked tyre. but I guess we all vaguely know what I meanish :-)

And yes it is huge! got it from here...

So did you read the rest of my message you snipped in the reply where I explained why ffs!

If so , which bit of Spain / France are you posting from and I'll cross it off my list of places I may go. Thanks for your contribution in advance.

Oh, that.

The jumping on a tragic bandwagon for a bit of self-publicity. Your 15 minutes of fame, so to speak.

I'm not looking for fame for me - I'm looking for coverage abroad to try and help find a vulnerable child. The Landy will most likely be parked when people read the text on it - I'll most likely be shopping / in a bar / on a busy campsite / on a beach or sight seeing. If I'm near the car It will be useless them speaking to me unless they speak English as I won't have a clue what they are saying, unless they want to sell be beer , bread a table or a window (GCSE French ...Don't ask!). If however they tell only two other people that day what they saw / read who tell one other person of what they have read then thats it - coverage job done. The probability it'll have the desired effect is highly remote but should that stop us trying? Should everyone give up and just right the matter off , go home and chalk it all up as experience through fear of people like you making sweeping comments like that above?

If you're suggesting I wanted fame from sticking my Landie in a magazine then I'd have done it with my IIa with Jag Engined auto an easy article which Mark Saville from LRO wanted to come and write up having seen it, or the Prototype 101 ambulance I owned for five years with me stood next to it looking all Famous, yeah right! Though I have had a mention when Sis's car was in a Mag but I lied about my occupation in the full knowledge of the articles editor to appear somewhat dull, mundane and inconspicious when I attend shows and chat with people about the vehicle without them forming their own preconcieved ideas about me. I much prefer they take me as they find me. Fortunately those who post here regularly / for some time have knoweldge of the very article I refer to and also to my true profession and as such will make there own judgement of your from the hip comments. Indeed check out my feeble web site which features...er... my cars. I can only think of only two photos on there of me amongst over probably 1500 odd and nothing of my lifestyle , Job , CV , other interests or what have you.

Now then, I don't think I've insulted you. But feel free to carry on abusing me, if it saves you slapping the Mrs , kicking the dog or abusing the neighbours then go ahead and vent, what ever blows your frock up. Alternatively you could do something constructive with your life / energy.

In news: snipped-for-privacy@mid.individual.net, Lee_D wittered on forthwith;

It's SteveH, and you went for his somewhat stinky bait....

Everyone does, sometimes. Me especially.

Good luck with the trip, I'd lend you my wheel cover but it's a pretty tight fit on a 235/70/16.

Whilst I personally wouldn't do it, it is entirely up to Lee, so let him get on with it & keep your trap shut.

a very civilised and agreeable response from you nige! not what i was expecting! feeling nicely chilled thismorning then? :-)

Lee - I assume you havent done snowdon before? its more of a 'walk' than a 'climb' generally. Have a good one!. Pack a beer each and sit at the top and drink em :). Beer tastes nicer when you have just conquered a big hill! well worth it (and easier than fighting through to the proper bar if its open)

I'll hit you up with some sponsor money. Will try and go past and drop in/drop it off.

its addictive! :) there are only really 2 or 3 nasty slopey bits if you do the llanberis path (and parking there is much easier). The rest is pretty tame.

am gonna do some messing with the 101 shortly so might pop over your way for a test run. Will see how the gas tank is looking as there wont be anywhere cheap+open over your way :(

Lee, I have a hosting company and would be more than happy to set you up with a web site and domain name that you could edit and update on your trip.

On or around Sat, 02 Jun 2007 11:21:31 +0100, Tom Woods enlightened us thusly:

done it up the Pyg track in the dark. Twice. first time we aborted the mission not that far from the bottom of the zig-zag, 'cos the weather was getting a bit rough, we had small-ish kids along and had we continued up to the top of the ridge I reckon there was a very real risk of having one blown off the mountain, which would've been a bit careless.

second time we made it to the top, then hung around a bit 'til the caff opened for a cuppa/brekkie and rode down on the train.

One of the contingent, at the time about 11 IIRC, wrote about it for "What I did in my Holidays" at school, and had to get her father to confirm that yes, we really did climb snowdon in the dark.

It was fun, but I rather doubt I'll do it again.

I'll not into any of the bollocks, but have you thought about doing something like this this for all missing kids? I would have no problem putting a different picture of a missing person every week etc?

There must be some kind of focal point for this kind of thing?

You could get loads of truckers etc (mind you, they are probably responsible for some of the missing folk) involved. The yanks do it with milk cartons, why not the backs of cars & lorries. I would definatly support that.

Just a thought.
