I've made this something of a tradition over the last 6 or 7 years. Sadly this 'little toast' seems more relevant now than ever before.
The Toast:
To all poor and distressed travellers Wherever they may be Over land, sea, or in the air
Wishing them a speedy relief from their suffering and a safe return to their native land Should they so desire
So mote it be.
Let's hope that any assistance we can offer actually helps and that next year is the beginning of a new and even better life for everyone.

A remarkable snippet of information: I was talking to a travel agent yesterday who said that he had spent hours phoning round customers who had planned holidays in Indonesia etc for the New Year, offering them the opportunity to cancel or re-arrange their holidays somewhere else. Three families stated that they would be taking the trip as planned, not for a holiday, but to go there and do what they could to help. I found that very moving.
We know a couple of nurses who took a career break back in November to go tour New Zealand (they're Lord of the Rings fans). They have apparently just offered to go and lend a hand if needed and broken their holiday short. As you say, rather nice that such gestures are still found. Almost makes humanity worth it again.
