oooh yeah! :) it lives!

Now thats what a 101 should be like! :)

Even without thrashing it it gets up to 30-40mph like a rocket! (in comparison to both how it was and my car!) I now have to keep an eye on my speed!. Before it seemed to like bumbling along at 25ish. That is now 35-40.

It sounds awesome! The v8 burble seems to be like a 'double burble' now (the best I can describe it) - which i assume is down to having a cam with some lobes on it! and its got a nice crackle when you change gear :)

and most importantly my new seats are really really comfy! It was such a new experience climbing in for the first time and not hitting the floor when i sat down.

Only problems seem to be -

It feels rough as f*ok on the overrun. Rather than just the 101 grumble it feels like the engine is trying to do it too. Is this just likely to calm down as it runs in? Is the socket wedged in the bottom crank pulley/damper likely to be affecting this too (it wont bloody come out!)

I cant seem to quite get the LPG adjustment quite right and my fueling is fluctuating between good-rich with occasional moments of very rich. If i turn the main flow adjuster down any it seems to make it too lean all the time. Could this be caused by the carbs being out of balance? on the old engine one lot of exhaust ports was sooty and the other clean so im guessing they arnt quite right - and ive not deliberately touched them when moving it over.

I'm still not quite sure if a 4.6 isnt still on my wish list :D

Nice one Tom! I'd say sort the LPG fueling first then get that geezer around who will balance the carbs and check the timing. My gut feeling is that your timing is out due to your "crackle" between gears though I could be wrong.

Have you plenty of coolant in the LPG vaporisor as the rich / not so rich may be the vap icing up and deicing.

How does it run on Petrol?

It could be. havent wanted to leave it idling for a while yet so havent really set it that accurately. Was very speedily set yesterday. Might drive it a bit more tonight and then set the timing again after. It feels alright and idles well which it never used to do when the timing was out.

its pretty damn warm under that engine cover so it shouldnt be icing up! Guess i need to run it in a bit and see how ti goes. As long as it isnt lean or super rich all the time it should be ok i assume.

It doesnt at the mo cos i ran out. It should run very lean since its all still set up for the 3.5. May chuck a bit in the tank later

It took a lot of turning to get the LPG fueling back up rich enough from the 3.5 settings (and to find a working old laptop to reset the o2 sensor with!).

Ah, ....

Our old Disco (shit only been gone a few days!) had two vaporisors because one wasn't man enough for the job.

Apparently you can get ones that are ok but maybe worth checking the limitations of the vaporiser as well.

this one is supposed to be good enough. Told em my plans when i got it and its run all the way up to the vaporiser with 8mm pipe rather than

6mm (which should give it enough flow)

Does it tick or anything? (indicating buggered cam from my 3.5 experience)

Dont thing so....

It sounds like a V8, with slightly noisy tappets..... It doenst go very fast at the top end either??

Reply to
Mark Solesbury

the noisy tappets was what i was trying to get at with the ticking. Could be noisy because the cam is knackered.

That was like the one I've just rebuilt, stripping it seemed to be a combination of worn cam, worn tappets, valve not seating correctly so loss of compression. Haven't yet dropped it in, thats the job for 1/2 term.

Its incredibly nice having a 101 that moves like it should! You are gonna love it afterwards!

and if you hadnt already found this out - before i forget and cos its gonna help you - the angle bar that the back of the engine cover rests on is removable if you take all the bolts out (including the ones at

90degrees to it holding the right angled brackets) and drill the correct rivets out. You cant get enough lift on the engine using a standard engine lift without shifting that bar and mine got removed with a hacksaw (and re-welded to refit it) as we couldnt see what held it in with the engine in the way!

thanks for that heads up!! Would have prolly followed your route else!!

H'mmm Morph was clearly the SE version as the bar just unbolted without much to do about owt else. Only took the manifolds and carbs off in one then mind.

mine had rivets through the top of it and the bolts were hidden behind stuff.

Couldnt lift the engine with it in - its hard enough anyway in the ambi!

On or around Tue, 04 Sep 2007 14:02:42 +0100, Tom Woods enlightened us thusly:

I trust you realise the way the inlet manifold feeds the cylinders? Cylinders are 1-3-5-7 on the left and 2-4-6-8 on the right, but one carb feeds 1-4-6-7 and the other feeds 2-3-5-8. or summat like that :-)

with that in mind, if 1-4-6-7 are richer than the other set, then that would indicate carb imbalance.

Yes. I did know they wernt simply split by Left/Right (I think i picked that up on here! ;) ) and the soot/non soot did seem to match up how the manifold split - there were 2 sooty ones on each side..
