Hi, My brother in Law has recently aquired a P Reg RR P38 with electronic gearbox. The motor is shot, and he has a mazda 2.9 motor to put in it (currently in a RR classic).
my question is, what does he need to buy and from whom, to make the electronic gearbox work with the Mazda engine?
Or could he move the RR Classic GB along with the Mazda during the transplant?

It is more complicated than just the gearbox You need to fool the existing engine ECU that the original engine is still fitted because that passes information to the BECM for other functions. This is done by fitting sensors to the diesel engine.
M & D Engineering are the people to talk to has they have made a kit for the 2.8 Tdi to fit the P38.
If you did swap the engine and box you would need to use the P38 transfer box as the propshafts are on the other side of the gearbox than that of the RRC.
An awful lot of work to get a P38 running...then you have got everything else to go wrong after ;-)

It isn't as simple as fitting the P38 transfer box to the classic gearbox - the output shaft and rear housings are different as well. Badger.
If you can find someone who will make you a one-off adaptor plate for an engine/gearbox combo let me know, because all the quotes i've had for one are more expensive than buying a new car.

You have to wonder if he might be better of looking for a damaged donor Beemer TD for an engine or maybe BMW thought of that and made a few 'necessary' changes to make life more interesting.? Derek
