Reckon 600 quid by ferry from Venice to Patras, for a family of four in a 101 - the bastards really sting us for the height of the vehicle.
Are there enough of us to get a group rate for this project I wonder ?

I've just worked out the Maths and it's a none starter for a two week run for us.
At best I've calculated Fri from school to Ferry port, Sat to Luxemburg, Sun to Augsburg, Mon to Due south of Innsbruck, Tues arrive Venice and ferry at
1900 hours arriving Thurs at 0600. This pretty much gives a day to turn around and come back on the return leg. I've worked on 250 miles a day which with a Caravan is enough and with a 101 would need an ear drum transplant.Cooler is better I guess but this would be way too much travel for the hell of it. based on the above I'd be looking realistically at a 4 week break minimum to justify the travel pain and expense.
You may not I've avoided Switzerland... this is because you have to pay a tax on your Vehicle AND caravan which adds up to a fair wedge unless you stop there a while or return in the same year isn't worth the short cut.
As much as it pains me an Airplane may actually make sense on this occasion... I understand Disco nav systems work in some ;-)

We'd drive a lot harder than that.
We'd only take the ambi for this anyway, but two vignettes would only amount to 40 quid, and you might save that in petrol...

A/C will only be necessary if you chose to visit from early June until mid to end September. LPG is a nice idea though.

noise can be addressed. Noisekiller will do some good work. (But I may be biased since I represent them here in Greece. But Steve does know his job and he is not selling seaweeds for silk ribbons)
Engine heat is a problem but heat insulation may also do the job.
As for fuel, LPG and a fuel saving device may give good results.

Greece is definately NOT a big place as far as distances are concerned.
BUT you can add a lot of miles because there a lot of places to see and drive to.

Sunblock is recommended. Try to avoid Athens unless you want to visit the Acropolis and the museums etc.
If offroading is your game then Central Greece is where you must focus. Poleponnese is not that bad either (and it is where the ferry to Patras docks) but Epiros is excellent for offroading to and this is where the Igoumenitsa port is.

Patras port is much more convenient if you tow a caravan since it is directly connected to the motorway. On the other hand Igoumenitsa is currently in the process of being connected with the Egnatia system of motorways which is supposed to be connecting this port (Igoumenitsa) with Istambul in Turkey. This is EU financed public work and AFAIK a big part of it is already been given to circulation and use. But I have not travelled there for the last 10 years and I can not express a first hand comment about it.
I can ask and provide more input ifyou are interested.
But as already quoted on another posting I just left Epiros (the region where Igoumenitsa is) is extremely nice and has a lot of things to see.

No , got one too many dead friends to push it. It's begining to sound more like the Mac 4x4 than a Holiday, not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I like to soak up the scenary.
Tis cheaper than I thought mind.. may go through if only to camp there on route a couple of days or so and soak up them there hills. How about Italy we could meet half way so to speak then.

PONSF to Zeebrugge, through Lux and the back of France. Start 8 in the morning, and with 2 drivers mind. At 50 miles an hour, 10 hours is 500 miles. Through France and into Switzerland in a day... We've done enough France. We'd stop in Switzerland for the night with some old friends in Attikon, then drive on.
I think we need a group of more than 3 of us to make this fun. You, me and Nige et al is fine, but we could have a lot more craic with a whole ferrydeck of campers !

We'd have to cross at Dover or wherever and meet up somewhere in France/Switz. NSF is just too far from Pembs. However, I did arrange to meet friends once on a certain set of steps in a town in Tuscany, August
8th, 1pm. Travelled independently from UK, the buggers were 30 minutes late! Not a bad recce after 1500 miles of travel. While waiting, spotted (and had a drink with) two friends from the same town who we didn't even know were going there.You're right, though. A bigger group would be more fun.
Oh god yes, its just NSF from where we are (90 miles from Hull)would save us 300 miles of UK driving and an extra overnight.

Portsmouth's good for us - closer than Dover, but a longer and more expensive crossing. We have always gone this way, but are using Dover this year as we are heading East towards Switz rather than South to Brittany and the West coast as we usually do.
Greece Ball Rally. Sounds like a plan.
