Ping Pantellis - totally OT

Hi, Just got back from a weeks sailing in your beautiful Ionian Islands. Great weather, scenery, sailing and lovely friendly people. Saw a few Landies and a J reg Disco near Govia. ( Need to work on the beers a bit though....)

Efaristo!

Tony Hi,

glad to hear you had a nice time. I guess you chose just about the best season to come visiting Greece. Mid summer tends to be overcrowded and you can not get decent service. But during spring, very early summer or very early autumn is the best. Mind you we do have some excellent ski resorts also so why not consider visiting during winter also?

And give me another ping when you will be here. Maybe we can arrange to meet and off road a bit together. Greece is an absolute heaven for offroaders with free access to ALL forestry roads (apart from very few on protected forest areas where a special permission is required but is easily granted)

BTW how many fellow listers would be interested to offroad in Greece? I am considering setting up something like that.

Take care Pantelis

Is there a quick way in by ferry, or would you have to drive down through Yugoslavia ?

coor, I just mentioned this to Mrs D as an alternative to Africa and she said yes!

Only once I've finished the 101, LPG'd and fitted Air con mind!

Lee D

I was about to say, continental drift might get him there before he's finished, what with all the work he's lined himself up for!

Nige uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Yeah done that milage already with the Caravan on too. not to bad as long as you pace yourself (with kids on board). Just be the heat in the 101 that would be an issue... and the fuel....and the noise...

H'mm yep could do the Disco and Caravan

formatting link
(piccy at Santander on the way Wom after last years breakdown) option much sooner, would the Ferry cost more than the Discos value though for the Disco and Caravan? Only down side is we would be purely spectators in the Disco due to the LPG tanks.Local bloke here regasses for £70 on the doorstep. I've got a pipe to fix then regass, still works at the mo but lost alot of fluid before I managed to plug the hole.

Lee D

Oh No! Great sailing and Great Offroading! I'd never be able to choose which to do..... Mind you, the good lady is keener on sailing than offroading so I guess the Disco will have to stay at the airport again, and be jump started on my return even though it has a new battery :-(

Best wishes TonyB

Would be very interested, although I've burned nearly all my holiday at work until next March. Sounds good, though.

Make a hell of an unofficial meet !

What about stuff like LPG availability Pantelis ?

Steve

Who's up for the latter half of the Summer'ols then next year, say the last

2 to 3 weeks?

Overnighter to France, 1st camp 2/3rds into France, 2nd Northern Italy few days, 3rd stop South Italy the ferry... then I come unstuck so thats say six days so far (x2 for return = 12) could give a week in Greece, do I need sun block?

Plenty of time for planning and plenty or prep time plus the Kids are off....

Now I've gone and got all hyped up I'm going to check the ferry prices...

France OK for LPG and Italy ..... is Greece a big place then? Really should have paid attention in Geography.

Pantelis,

Lets just assume this beer fueled frenzie I have comes to fruition would you be able to organise something close to a Ferry port?

I'm looking at Autoroute which only shows ferries in to Igoumenitsa in the North and Patras in the South. I'd guess financially the North would be the prefered venue but there doesn't appear to be much in the way of Motorways on Autoroute....which is a good thing unless your tugging a caravan?

What do you think?

Lee

Lee_D uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Euros 682 return from Bari to Igoumenitsa (Aug 21 and Aug 28th for the sake of some dates) 4 Berth outside cabin 2 adults , 2 children, Disco and large caravan.

No details for 2007 yet on the site but gives an idea.

There would of course be camping, ferries / chunnel and fuel in addition but this doesn't look a bad deal to take in France, Switzerland (extra vehicle & caravan tax mind!), Italy & Greece.

Unlike the UK unofficial we may need to pack a fan or two.

Lee D

Sounds tempting!. I really will have a 101 done by then!

I might be able to provide somewhere to stop for the night in france too!

This is getting better all the time...

Right NG then.

Nige uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Caravan meself.... You have plenty of time to get some practice in... Eastnor... Malvern to be honest it's not that bad, My first trip abroad ever was with the Caravan to the South of France.

I found it fine as long as you don't over react when a truck comes past and sucks you towards them.. It's almost better to ignore it as it almost self corrects. Does teach you to keep them peeled on the mirror though.

The beauty of the Caravan is if the plan goes up the wall we can pitch down at a municipal campsite or Aires (Motorway rest area) given our numbers we'll be well 'ard.

HOT! Easter would suit us better.

Oh yes, only time I visited was in early April and we needed sunblock then even through the infamous Athens smog. It is as far south and a little further than Sicily.

Just over half the size of the UK.

Lizzy

Drat, thats 2 weeks which kind of defs out touring en route. Also cost me an arm and a leg in lost Bank holiday rate working. Could gain ground and reduce driving by going from Venice.

Looked up my Michelin Map of Europe and it's not a bad old run... seems to be much more in the way of Motorways in the south (oddly refered to as West Greece) from the port towards Athens.

Thinking back to 101's though easter and Heat wise would make sound sense. I'll check my shift roster see if it'll bankrupt me. Then we have the dilema of matching Easter Hols across county Borders... Mrs D is a teacher so can't be AWOL.

I think first we'd need to compare when Easter Hols are.... as yet, not a clue.
