Reggie (and son!) Update

Reggie - 1990 200Tdi 110 County Son of Reggie - 1989 2.5TD 90 Truck Cab

I have asked a few questions here in the past, so I'd thought I'd update you with where we are!

Reggie

I have just finished a week at the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway "learning" the box in Hythe.

  1. Reggie (with the new to him 200TDi) has just done over 400 miles towing our 17' caravan with no signs of overheating. It did a fair chunk of the M3, M25, M26 and M20 at 60mph (pulls better as well!) It looks like it was the radiator.

I did have a minor panic though when I noticed the temperature higher than normal, it turns out that when I have the headlights on, the temperature gauge goes up - voltage stabilisation problem?

  1. I collected the new flexible pipe (turbo charger to intercooler) from the LR dealers in Ashford on Thursday. (£34!) Reggie is quieter and more powerful again!

  1. PROBLEM - I have a vibration from what I think is the right front wheel. It is speed related. It is more obvious at the lower speeds (30

- 40 mph). There looks as if there may be (just may be!) a balance weight missing. Could it be that or a wheel bearing on the way out (or something else)?

  1. Veggie conversion is scheduled for August, I'll let you know how we get on.

Son of Reggie

  1. We removed the old 2.5TD from the Truck Cab, on removing the starter motor my son found a large hole in the crankcase - on the opposite side there is a crack in the block.

  1. The block was replaced with the one from my County and re-installed. Works nicely, shame about the cost of insurance! I'm going to insure it for the next 12 months and use it from time to time. He'll look at insurance again in May when he's 19. (Had a licence for 14 months but never driven - crazy isn't it!)

  2. I picked up a 90 roof and sides from fleabay and a rear door from the Land Rover orphanage. That's another weekend job to do - anything to watch out for?

  1. There are no carpets in the 90. What's the best source for these. As it is for my 18 year old son price IS important!

That's it for now.

Cheers

Peter

Veggie for Reggie, I like it.

If you are genuinely going to insure it for your own use then look into putting him on as a named driver. I put my son on mine when he fist passed so he could occasionally drive, the bonus was that when he came to take out his own policy he had earned a bit of no claims discount. This saved him almost as much as naming him on mine for a year had cost.

That's simple - carpets? This is a Land Rover. I've never had carpets in a Land Rover

OK, point taken, something other than the steel floor (to give a bit of soundproofing if nothing else!)

Old conveyor belting works well - especially in the rear.

I've never found LR particularly noisy unless running with all the floor panels removed. It's quite important to seal all the holes in the bulkhead, front floor, seat base and transmission tunnel: that does help. But this is a diesel - I don't know much about diesel LR! The gearbox/transfer box is the main noise generator with a petrol one - is that also true for a diesel?
