Retro fitting new 2002 centre console

Apr 03, 2004 1 Replies

Hi,

Has anyone actually fitted a new type 2002 spec TD5 dash into an earlier Defender? I want to have a go but have received mixed messages.

If you have perhaps you could answer these questions for me? Do you have to modify/change the wiper system too? Does the tray to the left of the console FAB012860PMA fit the old dash without modification? Do the vent levers need any modification? Did you find a source to supply the connectors that fit the rear of the switches? Finally! Was there a problem wiring in the hazard switch, the others look fairly straight forward but I read in your post the new one has 9 connections!

I would be really grateful if you could answer these question.

Thanks a lot

Tony

I fitted one to a 1998 Defender.

You need to "emulate" the existing switch with a relay to allow for the simple single pole switch used in the new dash.

Yes.

Tes, you need to use the later vent levers as they lock/operate differently. They only cost a few quid though (they are available via a Britpart reseller - LR dealer quoted 3 month delivery, Britpart via Maddison4x4.com took 2 days).

No, unfortunately I ended up soldering a short wire to each of the pins and using a mix of bullet and multiway connectors.

No problem as such... the wiper control is the most difficult to figure out.

I would strongly advise that you use the matching steel plate that fits behind the dash. I used the existing one and hacked away at it, then found out a new one wasn't expensive. If you use the old one you will need to cut a large slot in it for the back of the radio to go into and make some mounting points for the vent levers.

With the new steel plate, the only fabrication (other than electrical) is to cut the top off the raised central area of the existing dash and fix a plate in it's place for the bottom of the dash to screw onto. ( you'll need to cust a hole for the cigar lighter to go through).

If you find a source for the connectors - let me know.
