seen rare 4x2 series 1 for sale on e-bay

Hi!

I was just looking through Land Rovers for sale on e-bay, and noticed a 1958 series 1 4x2 for sale, starting bid £100. There were only a few hundred of these 2-wheel drives, built for the military. The seller (who has no connection with me) is in Worcester. Take a look!

It's also been converted back to 4x4, which makes it just another Series 1, albeit with an interesting past.

Theres an article in the november LRO about converting series 1's back to 4x2, which includes details of a few people and places who have sets of the original bits you need, doesnt seem like the author had too much trouble finding the kit you'd need.

Hmm. But now it's been in the mag, suddenly everybody who has a 4x2 to convert back will want em!

Ad states < It drives very well, the only fault being that the break servo vacuum pipe has been disconnected & blocked. This was because Brake fluid was passing down it.>

Brake servo?

Hi!

£1,270? !!! It must be a different one, the one I'm talking about had 3 bids 5 mins ago, highest £181 (reserve not met). You might have guessed I'm not bidding, but if I lived nearer and had the space to store it I might have done!

Again, must be a different one, the one I'm talking about is 4x2, but with a spare standrd front axle "to convert it to 4x4". Doesn't it need a different transfer box too??

i had to search for "1958 rover" to find that. Makes me wonder how the ebay search stuff actually works since it didnt show up in my searches for "land rover series 1"

The prices of cars on ebay make no sense!

Ah-haaaa!!! I just looked up "Land Rover" - I was actually looking for Discos and Defenders!

AFAICT eBay only searches for whole words. So a search for "Land Rover" will find the cheaper 4x2, while a search for "Landrover" will find the expensive one.

The one on ebay at the moment is a "FUV" 4x2, converted to 4x4 with a later SII 2.25 petrol and SII xfer box in it. Thus rendering it a normal S1 with an interesting history, rather than a "rae" 4x2 version. The xfer box was different, with a blanking plate fitted where the output shaft box should have been.

Which has not got it's original FUV registration. In Fact it has completely the wrong reg on it, as BDH 146B is a registration dating from 1964.

It says it's ex-military - so was '64 the date it got its first civvy reg? Were the FUV regs allocated after vehicles were demobbed too? Perhaps if I were a real member of the third level of Landrovering I'd know that, but I'm don't!
