Hi All, On the rear brakes, should the 'anchor' thingy (the banjo shaped thing) go on the leading or trailing shoe? That is, on the right hand side (say) should it go on the shoe nearest the front or the back? The Haynes manual (yuk!) gives no idea.

if its what im thnking, it fits at the bottom of the shoes, then it doesnt matter, as as far as i know its just a retainer.

Yes that's the one, fits at the bottom, goes over the 'post' in the middle, and bolts on to one shoe stopping it from coming away from the post. (The two shoes are only held on to the post by the spring). But the other shoe is free to be pulled away from the post by the action of the drum, against the spring of course. My guess is that the shoe that is having it's bottom (if you'll pardon the expression) dragged away from the post when moving forward, needs the retainer thing. But really I've no idea.

The Landrover manual describes it as "anchor for trailing shoe" which means it does go on the shoe which is being pulled off the post when the brakes are applied going forward. It will need to be there to ensure that the brakes release in all circumstances. JD JD
