Surprising amount of detail on Garmin GPS - and nearly gets me stuck

I'm working away in the week at the moment, and having run out of things to do in the evening I decided to pop and see a mate in Tregaron about 30 miles away. No problem, plug in the Garmin and let the unit do the work......... It took me to his door no problem but after a cuppa i thought i'd make my way back. As the same as most Land Rover drivers (the road less travelled etc etc) i thought i'd take a different route back, "Ah!" i think, looking at the display theres a road marked which goes really close to Strata Florida and Devils Staircase etc etc, i'll go that way! It started off good enough, just like some of the local lanes here in Pembrokeshire, but eventually it started to get progressively worse and worse, the GPS showing 800, 900, 1000 and eventually over 1500feet. It was 10pm by this time, and blowing a hooley/ raining and finally the little lady in the Garmin says "in 300yds, turn right then drive for 5 miles". I couldn't see more than 15 feet anyway so had to trust what the old dear said and turned the Range Rover down said road........... I tell you what, I would have thought twice about taking my trialler down there never mind my road truck!! I was amazed that such a minor road was shown on the GPS. Having just looked at my paper map, it really is in the middle of bloody nowhere! Or SN783575 to be precise!! Lesson learnt. I will be carrying some paper maps from now on, or will be changing my GPS that shows overalyed maps. Or, er, perhaps I should perhaps just go in the daylight, and on a nice day... (walks away, head bowed.................)

Dave R uttered summat worrerz funny about:

But didn't you get a buzz! :-)

Done that a few times in the works motors, and recovered a few other works motors from patroling the far flung reaches of the patch.

I relied on my first GPS in France where we had been doing something like

300 miles that day. Caravan on the back and going through a small village. Concentration lapsed and I followed the turn right... straight in to the middle of one of the smallest , tightest carparks known to man. It was that tight as we got to within a coat of paint of contact with a couple of cars all passers by pretended we were invisable and gave up all attempts at guiding us back out. Grew a couple of extra wrinkles that day I'll tell you. :-)

Whilst bunker hunting in Germany and Sweden

for anyone who is interested) I am constantly amazed by what a friends TomTom knows about the most tiny tracks in the middle of nowhere.

Anyone venture an opinion on the Garmin Zumo 500 Deluxe or Zumo 550? Or the TomTom Rider? I want one that works on the bike and can be used in a vehicle.

Abso-bloody-lutely. I was laughing to myself in the end. I always consider myself as pretty responsible kind of person and wouldn't naturally do anything that meant that if I got into trouble, others would have to come and rescue me, but I think that this was nearly one of those situations. Vehicle with less than quarter of a tank, dressed in jeans trainers and t-shirt, and of top of that, no-one knew where I was - DUH!

I guess everyone on this newsgroup has had that feeling in your stomach when you realise that the wheels are spinning and you're not moving..........

I wouldnt have even been able to walk out as with the lights off you could see absolutely nothing.

But like you say, fun though, and made a good story in the bar that night........

Rechargable torches in all my vehicles now, and also some of those chemical glow-bars that you snap which then give out a feeble light for about 12 hours. And some water, warm clothing and a book to read at this time of the year. None of it takes up much space so worth putting in, even if at most you risk being stuck waiting for the RAC/AA for 4 hours in the dark if all your electrics fail!

You can get some small "survival toolkits" in a baccy can that include things like candles, fire-lighting material etc, although trying to use the firelighting stuff for the first time out in the arse of nowhere on a cold, wet night might not be the best way to go about it ;-)

that's not the road from strata down to the tregaron-abergwesyn road, is it?

Oooh, I like. if they've got that on stanav, that's going to make some beautiful cockups, it'll get on national telly, you mark my words...

If you cam from strata southwards on an unmade "road" which is more like a river in some places to get there, then what I say above is true.

famous old route, father rode it on his 500T Norton in about 1950-summat.

I actually went to Strata Abbey first and then on the way back turned off in Tregaron heading towards Rhayader, so yes it would be southwards, probably SE? The road, was to start off with was just about recognisable as a road, and when I got to the point where I decided to turn around and come back it really was just gravel / mud in massive quantities. After looking at the map it seems that the way the satnav wanted to send me would have eventually joined up with the famous Strata Florida route, including the Devils Straircase, etc etc,not sure. On the way back down the mountain I did pass a car coming up so there must have been a half decent road somewhere up there. My training keeps me in Carmarthen till the middle of next year so I will attempt to go in the daylight when the weather is more clement!

not sure what the legal status of the road up to strata is at the moment. I expect someone will know.

Come up for a coffee sometime if yer heading north from Carmarthen.
