TD5 rechipping

Does anyone have any comments on rechipping TD5's. I had mine done about 12mths ago now, its making about 140kw & 450nm torque. The best $1000 I have ever spent on a vehicle. The original clutch couldn't handle the torque and gave up the goast after about 10000km. Had a clutch built to handle the extra torque and no problems since. I regularly tow full 3500kg over long and short distances with no problems. When it comes to pulling a load it will outpull Toyota's and Nissan's. I do need to use low 1st to start on anything but level ground with that weight, but shifting from low to high is not a problem. For anyone familiar with Australia I pulled 2 1/2t plus 1 1/2t of trailer from Brisbane to Gladstone nearly 600km and didn't get out of 5th gear all the way. Around here the only thing I cant keep up with on hills is F250 diesels. The down side is around 8km/l fuel usage empty & about 6km/l loaded. Top speed has not been increased at all, all the gains are the range where you need the power for pulling. Without a tacho I believe all the torque is between 2500 to 3500 RPM.You can feel the kick in the pants when the turbo comes on boost. Kerry

Which chip did you go for?

Its a complete change over ECU from Davis Motor Works in Sydney. Was fitted by Ricks Four Wheel Drives on Gold Coast.

Ah. A bit far for me. I'm in Wales. Thanks anyway. (I'm looking to chip my Td5 Disco, but can't seem to find anyone with direct experience of one chip over another.)

I carry out chipping on Td5's

I am the Kent agent for Bell Automotive which are a York based tuning company.

I have made a collection of Td5 tuning maps from other manufacturers and have seen them depicted on a 3D Graph. Some are very poor quality !!!

My customers include main dealers and all are very happy with the changes made.

So Marc, what performance / fuel consumption benefits do you achieve on a TD5 disco and at what price? What are the insurance implications?

AWEM (who happens to have a TD5 disco in Kent )

Hi

You are looking at an honest 30bhp and 30% more torque. So many claim to produce more but rarely do.

The fuel consumption is totally dependant on how you use the extra power/torque. An engine remap is not an economy device.

My own Defender I chipped at 3,000 miles and has now covered 14,000 the fuel consumption has remained constant both before and after chipping, dependant on what I am using it for. But it is just so much better at doing it's job now.

Price is £400 and if yours is a post 2000 MY then it is a while you wait service if it is an earlier model then there are a few more options and It would be a longer job.

If you use your vehicle for towing then it makes a huge difference and you will wonder how you ever managed before.

Marc, what kind of difference does it make to an auto?

The Auto responds much better to chipping than the manual does.
