Trickle Charging a 97 Range Rover 4.6 HSE

Hi,

About to have to leave the above vehicle for several weeks and need the alarm to be active. Anyone know of any problem using a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up for anything up to 8 weeks? The output of the charger is 300mA.

Thanks

Shouln't be an issue for a low current charger. There are warnings about using high power chargers, but this shouldn't cause a problem.

I would agree with that.

The general rule of charging lead acid type of battery is that the main charge current shouldn't exceed about 20-25% of the rating of the battery.

eg, if a battery is rated at 10Ah, then the full charge current shouldn't exceed about 2Amps

The trickle charger should be fine as you describe to keep the battery topped up - a decent charger should whack the full charge current into it until it starts to get full and then back off to a trickle to keep it topped up.

Only thing i can think of is that for whatever reason the BeCM is woken up - then the car will start to draw off the battery - if your charger is connected - it might not like that. For example, if the system draws more than 300mA through the battery - would the charger handle it?

Don.
