ISTR hot carbon plus air gives "producer gas" which is exothermic and not especially inflammable, and hot carbon plus water vapour makes "water gas" which is endothermic but results in vaguely useful gas (mixture of H and CO ?)

It's actually quite a high octane fuel but low calorific value and poor flame speed (limiting rpm), so the engine only develops a fraction of its rated power, some early rural cinemas were powered by Tangye DC generators running on anthracite. The gases come out at over
850C so need a lot of cooling before being imbibed by the engine (later coke gasifiers used contra flow air pre heating and egr to push up conversion and cool the fuel gas). It is CO+N2 when made from coke or charcoal. I always wanted to convert my 101 on this co-fueled with lpg.Water gas is a much higher calorific value plus it has high octane and good flame speed, it's a mixture of H2 and CO plus a percentage of nitrogen that slips through. Mind, there's a drawback to really big barbies, like you need about 1/2cwt of charcoal to burn in it. Mine already takes quite a lot to get a decent fire all the way along it.

If he is in the country! Currently in Korea and due back there again sooner rather than later. Even if Steve is away the boys and I intend to come along but only in the 101 if the new electronic ignition is all properly fitted.
