V8 crank pulley damper assembly, taking apart?

Afternoon all,

I'm trying to take apart the pile of pulleys and damper which hangs off the crank of the 3.9i V8. The assembly seems to be held together by 6 bolts running through - either 1/2AF or M8 (13mm head). The problem is that there isn't sufficient clearance to get a socket or box spanner onto the bolt heads without fouling the flange in the centre of the assembly. Can't turn the nuts, as they are locked flush against a flange on the other side - I think by design.

Any suggestions for undoing these bolts?

Cheers,

AndyC.

Have you tried a 3/8 drive bi-hex socket? Their walls are usually thinner than a 1/2 drive type.

That might work. I took it into our local engineering supplies today to see what they could offer, but they obly had 1/2" drive sockets. I'll cast around for a 3/8" socket.

Thanks,

Andrew.

If you have to buy, a set of Halfords Pro long ones is one of my most used 'extra' socket bits. And Xmas is close. ;-)

I'm assuming it is kinda like the damper on the 101 ambi?

that has 3 bolts. 1/2AF not metric. I have a set of 1/4 drive deep halfords sockets of which the biggest is a 13mm and that will just go over the head of the bolt. I think i have a deep 3/8 one too and that just fits if you knock it on.

However - even if you get the bolts out don't count on the damper wanting to separate from the pulley itself. I've had the whole assembly off the engine and beat shit out of it and they are corroded/stuck together into one happy lump which wont separate.
