yebbut, there's nothing quite like an air bearing. If you really need an air bearing, almost nothing else will do - and if you make it to lesser tolerances the air consumption goes up quite rapidly.
Steves air bearing did look pretty sweet!. not really a way of doing that without lots of little holes!
Thats absolutely the problem - this bearing is blown with spectro grade argon !

It did actually have a tiny dent in the lip of the moving part once i had wire brushed the crud off!. It is teeny though, so i made a compromise and drilled a 2mm hole to accompany it. If it runs too cool i'll get a new 'stat!..
