v8 flame traps..

Sorry for the glut of different threads!

I came to put the flame trap thingys back on the 101 and noticed that they are incredibly manky and presumably original. I'm guessing that there is some sort of filter in them to stop things going the wrong way through them?

Are they important? do i need to test them? (if so how?) or clean them? or should i just stick the old ones back on and forget about them?

Soak in paraffin/petrol mixture then set fire to them! Seriously, it'll burn out all the oily crud and leave them fit for further use, albeit slightly blackened and paintless! ;-) They are needed, they prevent sump fires but it's too long winded an explanation for the moment. If choked, they will cause the engine to run rich and use way too much fuel. Badger.

They are currently rather rusty and dirty so blackened is possibly a step up. I will try torching them!

It already uses too much fuel but i thought that was par for the vehicle ;)
