Warning - Defender fire hazard.

On a recent trip returning from Malawi to Johannesburg the wiring harness made a short circuit where it is clamped to the gearbox, just on the left of the gearlever. We managed to "limp it home", but now I have to repair the damage.

The wiring harness is held to the gearbox by means of a very sharp steel clamp, which has cut through the insulation. You better check out your Landy in this area and change it before the same happens to you.

Or in a similar vein, the fuel pump feed is on a thin but unfused cable on an early Range Rover. If the pump goes low resistance for any reason the wiring loom can burn out. Now guess how I found that out and who's RR now has a fuse ...

I've never been a fan of unfused or badly rated fuses on landrovers.

The SIIA LR's have two test sockets on the dash, the +ve one is a direct unfused feed off the battery. Also on SIIa's there are two fuses under the bonnet, both 30 amp. The headlamps, sidelamps, ignition and horn are unfused. The wipers, dials, gauges indicators, and brake lights are one fuse. The other 30 amp fuse feeds the interior light. (if fitted!) Interestingly though, on Forward Control models only (IIA/IIB) the headlamps etc are fused, however the ingintion and horn are not.

Big changes afoot when I rewire, I can tell you.

If this also true for SIII's, it explains a couple of 'niggles' I had ....

Heheheh, if this had been posted a while ago, it may have helped me with some wiring shorts and problems I had .. ;)

Yep. The horn, headlamps and inpection sockets (on the dash) are all unfused on SIII's as well. Headlamp flash is fused, but the main lighst and sidelights are not. Most SIII's have four fuses, where only three are used. Flashers and wipers are on one fuse, everything else is on the other one. With a bit of judicuous re-wiring behind the dash you could rewire the spare fuse to the ignition and headlamps.
