1992 ES300 - Car jumps when you put it in gear

My Lexus is fine when idling, but when you first put it into drive it jumps a little bit. After that, the car drives perfectly. What could this be? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

In order for someone to provide a reasonably accurate answer to your question, you need to provide some additional information, although it sounds like normal operation when the engine is cold.

What is the idle RPM?

When you say that the car "jumps" do you mean that the car suddenly moves forward a bit instead of sitting still when you put it in drive? I assume that the car is not leaving the pavement when you put it in drive ;-)

Does the brake hold when putting the transmission into drive or does the car 'jump' while your foot is firmly on the brake?

Does the same thing happen when putting the transmission into reverse?

It just moves forward a bit. If your foot is FIRMLY on the brake, the engine just revs a bit when putting it into drive or reverse.

That sounds like normal operation upon cold startup. Does the car behave differently than it did before or did you recently acquire the car?
