2007 ES 350

I recently leased an 2007 ,ES 350. All in all, I really like the car, but it has an unusual problem. When I back up and apply the brakes, there is a low booming sound from the rear of the car. I also notice the same sound occasionally when I accelerate from a standing start. One of my first thoughts was that there may be a problem with the differential or drive train until I realized the car is front wheel drive.

I went back to the dealer and the technicians can also hear the sound. They kept it for a day, but still couldn't find the cause although they determined the brakes are fine. Next week, the dealer's senior technician is returning from vacation and will also check the car. Fortunately, the problem is covered by warranty so, one way or the other, it will be resolved.

Have any of you encountered or heard of this problem? If so, do you have any thoughts about possible causes. I'd really appreciate any ideas you have.

Thanks.

I should have included in my earlier post that the technician and I drove two other 350's and there was no booming sound.

It is very difficult to identify the source of sounds without hearing them. "Booming" sounds occasionally come from exhaust system heat shields and brake backing plates. Also, make sure your spare tire, jack, associated stuff in the trunk is secured.

also, how full was the fuel tank? Near empty tanks can make the gas slosh around enough to make a dull thudding sound.

Thanks to both of you for responding. The items in the trunk, including the spare tire, etc., are secure and the gas tank is about full. Hopefully, the dealer's senior technician can solve the problem. I was told that they will provide me with another ES 300 if they can't take care of the sound.

My guess would be a loose baffle ( or something else ) relating to the gas tank . I had a Buick that did the very same thing and the problem was a bad gas tank .

Dana:

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll mention it to the technician when I take the car back on Thursday.
