Navigation system upgrade

Hi, I have a 2005 430, my sister's new Acura's NAV system is FAR SUPERIOR to mine. What exactly do you get when you buy the upgrade? And where do you get it and for how much? I have to drive 2 hours to the nearest Lexus dealer. Thanks!

What exactly is "far superior" about it??

Those are excellent features- I agree with you it would be great if Lexus had them. The nav system definitely could use some improvement.

All of the currently available navigation systems could use improvement, I don't care who the manufacturer is.

BMW's is particularly bad. Lexus is ok, but still far from good. I haven't tried Acura's yet. I've only sat as a passenger in the Cadillacs, but their Nav system seems somewhere between BMW's and Lexus's in ease of use.

The GM cars I tried had a nav system with CDs - it disabled the CD palyer and you need to replace CDs when you move into a different region. It was a 2006 Buick.

It is not an *upgrade*, it is an *update* to the map data. You can buy it only from a Lexus dealer, and the disc retails for around $250.00. The newest version is coming out in November, however, there is no guarantee there will be an update to your particular area. Check with the dealer for a list of updated areas when the disc comes out.

The "system throws up the possibles" before you finish typing based on what's in the map data; that's better than having all the letters available for streets that don't exist in the database, don't you think? It won't allow you to add "cove" or "way" or "nw" if none of those exist for the address; it will if the "cove" or "way" exists in the map database. Are you using the space key after the street name to add "way" at the end?

If she has to use the nav system, how would she know the route is one she wants? :)

Look for the "turn list" button onscreen; I think it's at the top of the screen before you press "guide". Or, once you start the guidance, press the "route preview" button on-screen. There is a "turn list" button there somewhere...

My perception is that Honda used Garmin's software, and Toyota (Lexus) used some other company unused to navigation. Our 2006 Lexus RX 330 NAV was so bad I had to quit using it. We were traveling across country from East to West this Spring. Periodically the GPS would say "take the next exit and make an immediate right turn". This was utter nonsense, and we had to put up with it across this great country of ours. I can provide numerous other examples of the worthlessness of Lexus (Toyota) GPS comparing it to my 2006 Honda Accord which is spot on!! Our dealer was very supportive of the faults of the Lexus GPS, and gave us a free XM radio install to assuage our disgust!

My next SUV will be an Acura MDX just for the accuracy of the GPS!!!

If your Nav system was telling you to take the next exit, you've turned off the "allow freeway" or "allow toll road" settings, and the Nav system will try to route you on city streets only. You can easily tell if you've done this by looking at the "route overview".

upgrade?

That's funny! Been there, done that!

Hey, maybe I can get a free XM radio out of my Lexus dealer with that one. Thanks for the suggestion!

Jules, don't worry, there's nothing to fix with the Nav system except lack of knowlege on how to work it properly.

You're welcome. The owner's manual on the Nav is very comprehensive (meaning, incredibly thick), but the best way to get used to your system is to use it as much as possible. For example, try pushing the compass icon in the upper left corner to see which way you like best. There's heading up (the car is always facing up and the map rotates around it) or North up (like it sounds, North is always up). I find North up to be confusing as the car can be facing up-down-left-right at any given time, so I use heading up as it shows what's directly ahead.

Corky just posts the same complaints anywhere there is a discussion on the Lexus nav system. For each "problem" he/she described I've posted explanations as to what he/she probably did wrong and how to use the system to it's best capabilies, but Corky never posts anything after the complaint. Flame the nav system and move on is Corky's method of operation... :)

Yep I am having fun playing with it. The database is not very complete though. Local police stations over 40 years old are not in, my friends house, over six years old is not in. Not even the street. Not even the neighbourhood????? I am not in the boondocks either. So I am wondering what else is missing?

But I wouldn't be without it.

Things I would change if I could, the "agree" button. Ha!

But I would still buy it over again.

There is a lot to learn aobut it. It does make me want to drive places!

Canada. Yes the search area is correct. As far as the police stations, other, farther away ones show up. I am afraid to look for what roads may be missing. A few new highways were completed five odd years ago. Probably in because they are hard to miss.
