Starting problem- GS 300

Jun 28, 2004 3 Replies

I am wondering if any NG reader has had this problem:

I have a '98 GS300. The starting problem appeared about 6 weeks ago and it has been intermittent. When I turn the key to start, there is nothing- no lights on the dash, no sound - DEAD. I immediately try it again and, no problem- it starts! The problem was occurring daily, weeks ago, and did not reappear until this morning. In one instance only, the car started on the first attempt but was making an unusual grinding type noise. I shut the engine off and there was engine overrun for a few seconds or better put- the grinding noise was slowing to a stop although the engine was off. Again, this happened just once and MAY be unrelated to the problem. Lexus dealer service told me that they would unable to diagnose the problem unless it occurred for them.

Anyone had this??

Thanks, Stu

Not had your car's problem but suggest the ignition switch is worn and making poor contact. Jiggle the key when it's dead before trying to restart.

Turned out to be the starter. Thanks though

but that would not explain no lights on the dash !!
