205 1.9 GTi cold start and timing

I should really start to sort out the niggles with the car.

Main problem is the cold start. Even with a squirt of easy start and my foot on the accelerator, it usually takes about five goes before it fires. Then about three more goes where it fires for a second then stalls. Then I can usually start it and maintain the idle at about 2500 for a minute or two at which point it behaves a little better.

Is this an obvious supplementary air device failure? If not, what?

It also has a smoky exhaust. Can't even decide on the colour yet, but it's often noticeable at traffic lights. First I smell it, then I see it.

But I'm going to have a look at the timing and mixture before I even go there. The air-flow meter square cap is loose so who knows what POs have been doing.

Can anyone tell me where the timing mark is, in idiot-proof terms? :)

OOPS Sorry , the "easy start" reference confused me, plus all the symptoms are like a diesel with dead glow plugs !

I have been told that both problems could be caused by valve stem oil seals. I can't really tell whether the smoke is blue or black, but he reckons that this could also hamper cold starting due to wet plugs. Bollocks or possibility? (I know it could be responsible for the smoke, but cold start problem as well?)

even missing valve seals make no difference to cold starting, check the fuel pressure. years ago a friend had a car that had sugar or something put in the tank, it seemed to stick in the injectors and gave the effect of running very weak
