93 Rover 218SD 'faltering'

Hi All,

Just recently the ole 180K (1.9 Pug) Rover has started hesitating or faltering on light throttle loads at around 2k rpm. Accelerate or change gear (to move away from the 2K area) and it goes away / becomes less noticeable. Over the last couple of days in particular it's become quite bad (enough to warrant me applying more throttle or anything to get through / past it quicker).

I've not changed fuel suppliers particularly and it doesn't seem to affect the top speed or acceleration (so don't think it's the fuel filter and I changed that last service).

I've not had a diesel before and it's the first time this one has 'played up' so don't know the std 'try this' steps to do first?

All the best ..

Could be the injector needles are worn or the return springs weak. Best to whip and injector or two out and get them tested.

Hi Conor and thanks for that. Is 'testing' of this stuff something most garages can do or is it 'specialist' work please?

I think I have seen fuel 'additives' on the shelves of the car spares places that suggest will clean fuel systems / injectors .. do these generally work or are we back to snake oil?

Any diesel specialist can do it, Lucas or Bosch centre.
