A4 weird idle

Apr 21, 2006 3 Replies

'96 A4 1.8 (non-turbo), 129k. When idling the revs bounce back and forth between 500 and 1100 rpm for around ten seconds before settling back to the proper level. I'd have thought any idle control problems would mean the revs never settle? Any ideas?

Suggest you check vacuum lines - there are a few small vacuum lines in the vicinity of the throttle body. I've got an A4 (same year) with the same motor in it & found one of these vac lines split a year or so ago.

After that you might be looking at a bad MAF

Good advice. I'd also check the IAC valve - on renaults this commonly gets gacked up and stops working efficiently, leading to odd idle. Not sure if this is an issue on Audis.

Oh yes :-( They clean up fairly easily with carb cleaner.
