Air Con Laguna 1.8 16V - whats wrong? (re-gasing)

Hi,

Laguna 1999 V reg 1.8 16V. Current Mileage - 110K Towards end of last summer the AC stopped working however the fan itself is working fine, so no problem with hot air over the winter months and now with summer coming up I guess I need to sort this out. Been told by a mate that I might need re-gassing it. How do I confirm that is the case? Only clue I can give you is that when I turn the fan off the system (heating) makes a noise for a min before calming down. While I am here can someone confirm that the timing belt change interval is 70K miles on these cars (seems a bit excessive to me). And can someone also point me in the right direction to get a new dashboard (second hand) for this car ? it is a jagger dashboard.

Thanks for any help.

I hope I am wrong but I think you made a mistake when you did not get the air con checked out and fixed last year when the fault cropped up. If it has vented the refrigerant and the lube leaked away then running it 'dry' will have possibly damaged the compressor. An air con service with old refrigerant removal, purge with Nitrogen then refill with refrigerant and lube cost approx £60.

Here-in lies the problem. With the a/c inoperative you cant run it to circulate the oil around the system to keep the seals moist. When the seals dry out they shrink and cease sealing, so when you come to recharge it, you;ll have leaky seals which will need identifying and rectifying before charging with R134a.

Look in the Y/pages under air conditioning specialists.

Shouldn't do, since AFAIK most compressors will not start if there's insufficient refrigerant in the system.

It may have dried out the seals though.

Timing belt is due at 72,000 unless mostly town driven then lower say 60,000

Not cheap need to remove engine mount to get at it (amongst other bits) and fit a belt and tensioner and idler pulley
