Air con /heater problem

My wifes focus air con / heater system is not working properly

when you turn the heater fan switch it only runs at top speed on setting 4 and the aircon wont switch on , if you set it between 1 and

3 the aircon light comes on but the aircon doesnt work neither does the fan , checked all the fuses and they seem to be ok , any ideas

The fan fault is failure of the fan speed resistor pack; Google will give you the info you need if you fancy replacing it yourself. Note that failure can be caused by not changing the cabin filter at the proper intervals.

The a/c won't work without the fan running.

You'll find its clogged up solid. Should be done every year, every two years at most. Every one I've ever seen where the heater only works on speed 4 has had a blown thermal fuse on the resistor pack and a pollen filter blocked solid. The filters are less than a tenner. You'll need a set of torx bits to remove the trim under the windscreen to get access to it.

Thanks , if its only a thermal fuse thats failed i can solder a new one into it

Not on a Focus you won't.

Early cars had three cross-head screws, later just one.

Get the proper butyl seal from a dealer, and clean all the mating surfaces properly or it will leak for sure.

Eh? Err why?

because they are a ford and this model suffers from water leaks round the pollen filter (I thought it was early ones that had a major problem there)

Water leaks from the pollen filter cover into the passenger side are a well-documented Focus peculiarity. When you look at the design, it's hardly surprising.

Didn't think it was a Ford thing, just a Focus design fault.

The cover was modified around '02; the change seemed to be mainly to reduce the number of screws from three to one, and increase the number of breakable plastic clips that are part of the cover.

They certainly haven't made any improvement in the ability or otherwise to keep the rain out IME!

The above applies to all MK1 and MK2 cars; later are OK.
