Some hand-held fluorescent lamps use a high-resistance cable to ballast the tube. I s'pose it's cheaper and lighter than a choke in the lamp itself. The cable gets noticably warm.

Shame I didn't learn how to spell "noticeably".
Which makes it a pain to splice back together if it gets cut or welding spattered through or someat.
The Aldi flavour uses a 2 loop PL type tube, just like energy saving compact fluorescent lamp except electronic ballast is in the fitting and lamp has pronged base.
