aluminium welding - cylinder head

Dec 08, 2004 5 Replies

I'm going to need an aluminium cylinder head (elderly bmw525) crack- tested, checked for true (flatness) and possibly welded up if it is actually cracked. Can anyone recommend a firm that can do this kind of work? Ideally somewhere near Woking in Surrey?

You don't say how old the car is, but have you considered a second hand head? Likely to cost a lot less than welding a cracked head.

They remanufacture most of the BMW heads supplied in this country. regards, JB

Might be cheaper to pop in a second hand engine, try BMW spares in Kent, they've got pallet loads of engines, gearboxes etc. Could possibly upgrade to a newer engine !

They're also about 3 times the cost of other places too in my experience.

Thanks (all) for all the replies.

I already tried FAB, who were very helpful but want £300+ for a refurb head vs. £400 for a complete motor - saving at least £50 on gaskets.

I may well end up going for a replacement motor but want to see if I can get a fix for less first.
