Annoying Citroen Xantia squeak!

Does it do it when it's raining?

Its been mostly dry since it started doing it, so I'm not completely sure. Why should the weather make any difference?

Rain can cause slight lubrication of worn joints (CV Joints, wishbones, etc) which supresses squeeking for a short time. That's why you hear of some people hosing underneath to get rid of dirt, which does get rid of squeeking, but it's really just a temporary 'cure'.

I await a post stating the usual diagnosis procedures for your particular model.

Can you isolate it a bit more? My first bet would be the rear suspension. It uses trailing arms or whatever they call them and a common failing is the bearing in the arm. After a while the creaking will get worse and worse and people will stare at you and eventually the rear wheels will start to lean inwards slightly. I've had it happen on the last 3 Citroens I've owned (BX, XM and Xantia). I reckon about £100 for a specialist to do the work. On the XM and BX it was relatively easy to whip off the old arm and bolt a secondhand one in place. The Xantia is a bit more cramped and so I let my local man who does do it.

I always slag French cars, so I thought for once I'd leave someone else to do it ;)
