Ah; I think there's a cutnpaste trick for that.
You just have to click on "show options" and then "reply" to get proper quoting. Don't know why Google have made such an arse of it. Their Gmail quoting works okay but by default, hitting "reply" at the end of a news message doesn't include any of the old message.
