True, but I find the cheap 20 quid type that come with their own plastic cases can also be extremely useful and are light enough to keep in the boot.

There were lots of things which I would want, but the request was for a list of the basics.
Sorry, I can't think of anything more basic than a huge lump hammer!
But perhaps not to be recommended for someone starting out on car DIY?
