BMW E34 - "No Washer Fluid" Message

Hi,

I have a 1990 E34 535i. What with the rubbish weather we have been having in the UK, the roads are covered in salt. As such, when I was out the otherday, I was frequently washing the windscreen. Eventually my washer fluid ran out. I stopped at the next garage and refilled the reservoir.

However, upon re-starting the car I had a "washer fluid low" message appear on the dash. Despite having just filled up! I have since run it down again and re-filled the concentrate & water reservoirs, but still can't stop this message everytime I start the car.

Does anyone know WHY it would be giving this message? And HOW would I clear it?

Many Thanks, Simon

there will be a float switch in the side of the tank, it has probably just stuck in the down position. you need to look inside and carefully lift the float, or unscrew it and clean it if you can't see it. it might clear itself especially if you have lots of speed humps.

Hi,

Could this be built in with the pump? I couldn't see anything else in the side of the tank.

Thanks

it is possible I suppose, but every other one I have seen has just been an extra bit in the side of the tank, or the base of the tank (less common) but I don't often work on bms so anything is possible

Sometimes it's in the lid - that's how Alfa used to do it, anyway.

Well there is certainly nothing on the lid. It is just a rubbish snap on plastic lid for BOTH tanks. Cant "see" anything else in the side of the bottle(s). Maybe it'll be a case of taking them out and looking? And maybe just cleaning things through?

SilentBob ( snipped-for-privacy@spammail.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

You'll need to take it to the local BMW dealer, and have them reset the "WasherFluidTasticMatic" ECU. The standard charge for that is £437.93+vat.
