Brake squeal

I have an older Micra, J reg, old body shape. After several miles I am getting a squeal from the front offside (I think) The slightest touch on the brakes and the noise stops for a few seconds then starts again. My immediate thought was brake squeal, but why does it take as much as 20 miles before it starts, then after leaving the car for a few hours it takes another run before the noise starts. The noise stops on a right hand bend and is worse on left handers, so I wondering if it was possibly a dry wheel bearing or even a dry drive shaft end, as the pressure varies on that corner of the car in the bends.

How can you tell the difference between the various faults that it could be. I do plan to remove the brake pads tomorrow and see if anything is loose (anti rattle springs for example), and I believe that a slight wipe of grease on the pad backplate can help. Is this so?

thanks for any advice.

a clean up and file the sharp edges off the pads will almost certainly cure it. There are various compounds that can be put on the back of the pad, including a smear of copper grease. It may also be caused by heavily worn discs, where the edge is acting as a sort of lip and touching the side of the pad, but you will see that on inspection.

Can also be the sign of worn pads, the wear indicator actually doing its job.
