Calling Diesel Heads

My wife has an Hyundai Accent 1.5 Diesel 2002 model. Shortly after buying it, it would not start for me when I left work. I cranked it 4 or 5 times and got nothing. I went back into my office, left it ten minutes, went back out and it started as if nothing had happened.

That was quite a few weeks ago. Yesterday my wife was out in the car and on leaving the local Tesco it would not rev. The throtte pedal did nothing. She called the RAC who came out and basically fiddled about and the car start revving again and carried on as if nothing had happened. The RAC man said that he had hadn't actually done anyting to get it going again.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? While on the subject, what's the best way to change a diesel fuel filter? I've heard bad things about disturbing a diesel's fuel supply and setting up airlocks which I think changing the fuel filter is kind of going to do.

Might be worth getting it scanned with a diagnostic tool to see if there are any error codes showing up.

Recent experience with RAC would sugest that this is the *first* thing they would do. There's really not a lot you can tinker with under the bonnet of a modern diesel so the diagnostic socket is probably the first port of call on most call outs.

I do hate when people reply to postings like yours with the words "I don't own a Hyundai accent but I do own a and I had the same problem.

However...... I have a Focus TDCi with a 2.0 Peugeot designed engine and I had the "no throttle response at idle" problem. After fitting a new set of injectors under warranty, which didn't cure the problem, it was discovered that the flap on the throttle body was sticking shut when the engine was started from hot.

There was enough air getting to the engine through the EGR valve to allow it to idle but not enough to allow it to rev higher than idle. There was also a lot of grey/black smoke from the engine when the fault was apparent.

I have seen several diseasels where the accellerator pedal potentiometer has died or maybe just got crap in it and you get the no throttle rev up symptoms
