Citroen Bitron sensor

Citroen Xantia 1.9 turbo diesel with aircon. 1996 if it matters

Whilst driving home I had the over heat warning lamp come on and the engine stop light briefly illuminate. As I was only a few yards from home I didn't do anything but when I got home the fans were whirring away even though the rad was almost cool. The engine hadn't overheated and the temperature gauge was reading normal. I put the heater on as I was driving and got plenty of hot air out and the coolant level was fine when I stopped. According to the Haynes BoL the Bitron sensor controls the fans and the overheat light and says that it can only be tested by a Citroen garage. Is this true? I've just done about 4 miles since the incident and the engine got up to normal temp on the gauge without any further symptoms

Don't be humble. You're not that great.

Bitron is a control unit that controls various warning funtions. There are two temp sensors on the cylinder head, I think there are three on some models. Separate sensor for temp gauge and diesel control. Probably a faulty temp sensor. There is a blue and green colour code for the sensors, but I can't remember which is which.

The sensor is on the thermostat housing but seems to be ok after this evenings run. I'll see after the 40mile commute to work

Ok I'll have a look. My local friendly Citroen specialist reckons that just occasionally you can get a glitch from these things or it could possibly be the thermostat. As it hasn't done it since I'll not worry for now.
