City Rover safety warning

Wheel Trims and Possible Tyre Damage Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has been informed by the Administrators of the MG Rover Group Limited that some City Rover models fitted with steel wheels were supplied with a wheel trim/embellisher that can, under certain operating conditions, rub on the tyre sidewall resulting in consequential damage to the tyre outer casing.

As MG Rover are no longer able to deal with this matter, VOSA, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport, is informing all registered keepers of the potential safety risk.

Registered keepers are being advised to arrange to have their vehicle tyres inspected for damage, and for any necessary remedial action to be taken as soon as possible.

VOSA is not able to advise on the action that will be needed in relation to the vehicle and keepers should seek and rely on their own advice. MG Rover have indicated that, in their view, removal of the wheel trims is all that is necessary to address any potential problem.

Since the trim rotates at the same speed as the wheel, how is it going to rub and cause any damage?

Tyre walls flex and if the trim overlaps the actual wheel rim, and is in close proximity to the tyre rubber, then it is possible that during cornering the rubber could be brought into contact with the trim.

Think about the shape of a tyre with the weight of a car on it.

But still no friction between the two. A big pinch of salt called for methinks.

If it protrudes past the rim and the tyre flexes sufficiently it could wear eventually.

Once the police got their hands on the Rover P6 3500, they managed to make the wheel trims rotate such as to chop off the tyre valves. Allegedly.

I have seen other cars with cheapo wheel trims damaging the tyre, causes a strange hard to find noise as well. Would also be worse with low tyre pressures of course.

Even more salt called for methinks. More likely they just fitted them incorrectly and fouled the valves.

I had a cheap set of trims on an LDV 200 do that once.
