Good grief. No one but no one is forcing you to read either of us. And just how do you think your comments improve the signal to noise ratio?

If you think trolling and responding to trolling is harmless, go have a look at rec.cycling, a group that was once useful. I'd hate to see this group go the same way.

The 'signal to noise' ratio, as you have described it, is a function of the amount of sensible subscribers to the amount of trolls. I strongly suspect the demise of a group to mostly be a reduction in the former, rather than an increase in the latter.

In this case, I agree with Dave that the person in question is not a normal troll. I tend to think of him as like the village idiot of yore.

I do genuinely like to try to work out the thought processes of posters like him. I rarely come down to their level, by swapping obscenities; I

*would* see that as a waste of bandwidth.

The longer view is that Usenet will inevitably fade into obscurity, as will 'proper' (non-HTML) email. It won't be because the alternatives are better, but because more users will be exposed to them.

You are making it go that way. The best thing that you could do to help the situation, as it was in URS is to STFU. It wasn't "the trolls" that killed URS. It was a small number of pompous "I know best" individuals.

[Sigh]

I don't think you understand what a troll is.

Every single cyclist who posts on any of the groups I read is a nutcase. Of course there could be many others who don't mention being cyclists.

Just how much could you say about cycle maintenance?

That looks like a link. I don't do links. Fuck your link and f*ck you.

How very observant.

Why did you respond to my earlier one then?

You're beginning to sound like an echo...
