Every now & again after the car has been standing for several hours, I start up and the engine runs very rough for a few moments (like it's not firing on all 4 cylinders) but soon clears itself and runs ok. It does seem to be weather related and does it more on cold days after it has been standing overnight. Apart from those initial few moments of splutter it them runs perfect for the rest of the day. Any pointers welcome. The car is a 96 Daewoo Nexia GLXi 16v.

Perhaps it isn't firing on all cylinders. While it's still running roughly disconnect a plug lead in turn to see if it's always the same cylinder/s? How old is the engine? Maybe there's a severe loss of compression on one or more cylinders.
Maybe there's a faulty spark lead shorting out somewhere. Have you tried starting the engine the dark and looking for stray sparks? How old are the spark plugs? Maybe a new set of plugs and/or leads would cure it.

Sorry to point it out but nowadays it is not a good idea to pull off plug leads (while running) as the massive voltages available can blow insulation and burn out sensitive bits, like distributor electronics. (I have done this to a Seat Ibiza) Better method is to expose the top of the plug/lead (with a short piece of metal tube if necessary) and use a screwdriver to short each plug/lead in turn.
